Fax Server FAQ

Add a Question

How many fax lines does DM Fax Server support?

DM Fax Server supports anywhere from one to hundreds of fax lines. The number of fax lines you choose to use is almost entirely dependant upon your fax traffic. The higher your inbound and outbound fax volume is, the more fax lines you need. Imecom Group’s sales representatives can work with you to determine the number of fax lines you require, and can also recommend the type of fax lines you should use. Can I use a regular fax modem with DM Fax Server?

No. Imecom Group discontinued support for Class 1 and Class 2 fax modems years ago because fax modems rely exclusively on PC processing power, which degrades performance, does not offer any advanced compression, and results in slow transmission and server downtime. Fax modems are also significantly less secure than intelligent fax boards. Instead, Imecom chose to provide intelligent fax boards and solutions capable of handling high-volume demands. Click here for a list of supported intelligent fax boards.

Can I integrate DM Fax Server with my email systems and clients?

Yes. Imecom Group offers options for integrating desktop faxing into all common email environments – Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, and any SMTP-based email system. End users are able to send, receive, and manage faxes as easily as emails, and right from the same place as emails. No additional client software or user training is required. Furthermore, DM Fax Server leverages existing network user accounts, so no separate user account creation and management is required on the fax server.

How do I address outbound fax messages created in an email client?

The address structure of an outbound fax created in an email client differs for each DM Fax Connector for Email. Here are examples for each connector type offered by Imecom Group:

DM Fax Connector for Microsoft Exchange: [fax:<name>@<fax number>]
Example: [fax:john@5551212]

DM Fax Connector for Lotus Notes: <name>@<fax number>@<fax domain>
Example: john@5551212@companyfax

DM Fax Connector for Novell GroupWise: <fax object>:"<name>.<fax number>"
Example: companyfax:"john.5551212"

DM Fax Connector for SMTP: <name>.<fax number>@<fax domain>
Example: john.5551212@companyfax.com

Additional information such as recipient company and department can be placed to the left side of the @ sign.  If this information is present in the address, DM Fax Server will automatically place that information into the appropriate fields on the outbound fax cover sheet.

Can I integrate DM Fax Server with my legacy and mainframe applications?

Absolutely. Imecom Group’s DM Application Connector (DMAC) provides automated fax and electronic document delivery from any application, including Host, legacy, mainframe, UNIX, and other proprietary applications. DMAC captures data generated by applications using print spool capture or directory polling to acquire the document to be faxed or emailed. It then processes, converts, and transmits the document to the intended recipient. DMAC is a robust e-document delivery solution that combines fax, email, and the Internet to streamline document processing and delivery from all applications.

What type of attachments can I send with DM Fax Server?

DM Fax Server allows users to attach all sorts of files to outbound fax messages. Common file attachments include MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, Lotus RTF, Text documents, HTML, and more. DM Fax Server’s built-in converter is a powerful image conversion mechanism that generates high-quality TIFF files for faxing. In fact, it’s so powerful that Imecom sells it separately as the Print-2-Image product. Most file attachments are converted on the DM Fax Server, however you may choose to install local fax drivers or fax clients for print-to-fax and workstation-side conversion.

I am installing DM Fax Server and the installation program is not detecting my fax board. Why?

This commonly occurs when the user installing DM Fax Server is performing the installation of DM Server software over a remote connection. The installation process should be done locally from the machine hosting DM Fax Server software.

I have installed the DM Fax Connector for Exchange, but I cannot send or receive faxes using Microsoft Outlook. The Imecom Controller Service appears to be in a "pause" state and I am receiving "OpenGatewaySession" errors in my event logs and the Activity Log on the DM Fax Server.

This error occurs because the user account designated to start the Imecom Exchange Connector Service does not have the required permissions to the Microsoft Exchange Server. Please refer to the product documentation for more information.

I have installed the DM Fax Connector for Exchange, but it does not appear under the installed connectors in Exchange System Manager?

In order to view the DM Fax Connector for Exchange using Exchange System Manager, you will need to install the snap in from the Imecom Client Install. To install this snap in, run \\<fax server><fax server>\imecom\ifbin\i386\setupwks.exe. Install the Exchange Administration Snap In.

PLEASE NOTE: This DOES NOT impact the operation on the Imecom DM Fax Server, it simply allows you to view the connector in Exchange System Manger.

I am trying to install DM Fax Server and have reached the MDAC/MMC installation portion of the install. I have chosen to install MDAC, but after the system restarts and the installation process resumes, I get the same error message and cannot go any further. How can I fix this?

Open the config.cfg file located in the Imecom directory. Locate the [ODBC] section and add the following lines of code:

[MDAC]
install=0

[MMC]
install=0

I have installed the Microsoft MS06-029 (KB912442) Security Update and my inbound faxes are not being received. What is the reason, and how can I fix this?

This issue applies to Microsoft Exchange 2003.

The MS06-029 Security Update affects “Send As” permissions. Once installed, messages sent via the Imecom Exchange Fax Connector (fax transmission reports and inbound faxes) appear to be sent, but are never actually delivered. Microsoft Exchange apparently accepts them from the application but they then disappear.

There are three possible solutions for 912442.

  • Upgrade to DM Fax Server 8.0.3
  • Switch to the Imecom SMTP Fax Connector
  • Remove the update

I am running Microsoft Exchange 2003 or Microsoft Exchange 2000 on Windows Server 2003 SP1 and I cannot create the Imecom Exchange Fax Connector. What is the reason, and how can I fix this?

In order to create the Imecom Exchange Fax Connector, you must add the service account to the Domain Admins group. This gives the service account the required permissions for creating the Exchange Fax Connector.

Can the service account used to create the Imecom Exchange Fax Connector be removed from the Domain Admins group once the Exchange Fax Connector is created?

No. The service account must remain in the Domain Admins group in order for the Exchange Fax Connector to function properly. This applies to Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2000.

If it is against your security policy to add the fax service account to the Domain Admins group, Imecom recommends using our SMTP Fax Connector instead. When using this connector, the service account does not need to be added to Domain Admins.
