Inbound Fax Routing
Inbound fax routing plays an important role in designing and implementing a network fax server solution. The DM Fax Server gives you a number of methods to route inbound faxes and several choices of where to route inbound faxes.
How Does Routing Work?
DM Fax Server is a rules-based network fax server solution, so inbound fax routing is controled via fax forwarding rules. These rules controll when and where faxes are routed, and in what format. You can have as few as one rule, or unlimited rules depending on your specific requirements. These rules allow you to tailor inbound fax routing to your needs.
Here are several examples of common conditions used for inbound fax routing:
DID/DNIS Routing
- The most popular routing method available, DID/DNIS is used for automatic fax routing. When the DM Fax Server receives a fax, it is able to detect the DID/DNIS information and route the fax to directly to an email user, printer, or folder. With DID/DNIS routing, the fax server completes the routing automatically, negating the need for a user to disseminate received faxes.
DTMF Routing
- DTMF routing is similar to DID/DNIS routing in that the DM Fax Server is detecting dialed digit information to use for routing. DTMF is commonly seen in analog fax server settings and is not as widely used as DID/DNIS.
OCR/ICR
- OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and ICR (Intelligent Character Recognition) refer to the process of scanning the received fax image for a unique identifier, i.e. a recipient's name. While Imecom does not develop OCR software natively, our DM Fax Server product line works with a number of OCR/ICR products.
Inbound Fax Line
- With DM Fax Server, you can route faxes based on the line used to receive them. This is a nice alternative to DID/DNIS routing as it offers some customized automatic routing.
Other Conditions
- DM Fax Server offers a number of other routing conditions, including CSID, date/time or reception, page count, and more. Check with your sales representative for specific routing scenarios.
Routing Methods
With DM Fax Server, you are able to choose where faxes are to be routed. Here are several examples of common routing destinations:
- Route inbound faxes via email to any mailbox on your company email server. DM Fax Server integrates with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, and SMTP email systems. When a fax is received in your inbox, it's just like any other email message. And with DM Fax Server, you can choose the file format for the fax attachment - TIFF or PDF. More.
Route to Printers
- Automatically route inbound faxes to any printer on your network. Simply choose the print button and select the desired printer when creating Automatic Forwarding Rules.
- With DM Fax Server and the DM File Connector, you can route inbound faxes to one or multiple folders on your network. Faxes are written to folders as TIFF or PDF files. From there, any third-party application, such as OCR or Content Management, can pickup and process the fax files. More.
Route to Databases
- DM Fax Server can capture information passed during the call setup and write it to a database. Also written to the database is a link to the fax image, which is placed into a directory of your choice. Inbound routing to databases is perfect for integrating fax into a workflow or document management system.
